[The Chrome add on is still in beta – please help us by reporting bugs]

Once you’ve installed the Open Attribute add on, which makes it ridiculously simple to copy and paste a properly formatted attribution for Creative Commons licensed work on the web, take a look at the right-hand side of the URL bar, and you’ll see a little icon.

Chrome toolbar

Any time that icon appears, you are on a page containing license information. To copy the properly formatted attribution information, click on the icon, then click “More Information”:

Highlight and copy the formatted attribution:

It’s that simple!

For now, Open Attribute only works on pages with Creative Commons licenses and if the license code doesn’t include complete attribution information, Open Attribute might not be able to get the full attribution for you. In the future, we hope to make Open Attribute work with other open licenses like the GNU GPL, and to make it smarter about pulling attribution information even when that that information is hard to find.
